Martin's Story
Martin started riding and his equestrian interest as an adult. He had briefly
flirted with horses a couple of time previously but never had either the time,
means or motivation to stick at it and learn.
After a while he became disenchanted with watching people
and their horse problems, some of the approaches he saw to horses and his own
lack of knowledge, despite an increasing number of horses. This is when he
started to study other horsemanship disciplines than the traditional methods and
came to try ‘natural horsemanship’.
What does natural horsemanship mean to Martin. It means
methods that are not cruel, not based around blaming the horse for what goes wrong
and adapting to suit each horse. It doesn’t need to mean lassoes, big western
saddles or accepting any behavior as that’s what the horse wants to do! It
means taking it slow, in controlled measured steps to ensure the horse learns,
both the horse and Martin (and the future riders) are safe. It means continuing
to learn, from the horses and from other opportunities like visiting experts,
DVDs etc.
Why let Martin start your horse? Because he is not the
‘ultimate cowboy’ he will try to always ensure the horse is safe and learns
the basics well. He understands what it is like to be unsure, a nervous adult
rider, just learning or simply not having the time to start your horse yourself.
He enjoys horses!
